E2U Ride

Questions people ask

What a Trip Host is, how a contribution is worked out, and what happens when plans change.

The basics

What is a Trip Host?

A member who is making a journey anyway and has offered to share it. They set their own origin, destination and departure time, and they keep them. They are not a driver E2U sent, they are not working, and they are not being paid. They are recovering part of what their own journey costs them.

Can I host and travel?

Yes, and most members do both. It is one account, one profile and one rating. You are not signing up as one or the other and there is nothing to apply for. Everybody sends three things E2U approves: your profile photo, your ID, and a photo of you holding it. Hosting adds a car on your account, its registration and your insurance.

Does E2U employ hosts?

No. E2U does not employ, engage, dispatch or direct any member, and never sends anybody to a destination somebody else chose. E2U provides the software that finds compatible trips, verifies who people are, works out how a cost is shared and keeps everybody in touch.

Directions and matching

How does direction matching work?

E2U compares where a Host is actually going with where a Guest needs to get to, and works out how much of the two routes run together. You do not need the same destination. A Guest can join partway along a Host's direction and leave before the end of it, and that is the ordinary case rather than the exception.

Two things decide whether a match is offered. How much of the journey the two of you share, because that is the part whose cost is divided. And how far the Host would have to stray from the route they were already driving to collect you and set you down. A Host sets their own limit on that, and anybody who would take them further is never shown to them.

Matching is on streets, not on cities. A Host traveling from one side of a city to the other is not a match for somebody going the other way across it, however close the two addresses look on a map.

How do there-and-back trips work?

A trip out and a trip back are two separate shared trips, and E2U keeps them that way on purpose. Sharing the journey there does not commit either of you to the journey home.

When a Host shares a trip they can say they expect to return, and the return is posted as its own trip. A Guest who traveled out with them sees it first. Nobody is held to it: the Host can change when they leave or go home another way, and the Guest can make their own arrangements. Each leg is worked out and settled on its own.

The reason is simple. An evening runs long, somebody leaves early, somebody gets a lift with a friend. A return that was promised in advance and then does not happen strands somebody, and E2U would rather say plainly that the way back is a second decision.

How does event travel work?

A game, a concert, a conference: a lot of people heading to one place at roughly one time, which is the easiest thing in the world to share and the hardest thing to park at.

A Host shares the trip to the event like any other direction, with the venue as the destination and the time they intend to arrive. Guests heading the same way ask to join. The contribution is worked out exactly as it is on any other trip, from what the journey costs to run, divided between the people in the car.

Parking at the venue can be shared when it is eligible, because it is a cost of that journey that everybody in the car benefited from. It appears as its own line rather than being folded into the mileage, so you can see what you are sharing.

The way home is a separate trip. See how there-and-back trips work.

How do Regular Directions work?

A Regular Direction is a saved behavior, not a standing booking. You tell E2U that you drive to work at 7:30 on weekdays, or that you need to get to the gym on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings, and it keeps posting that for you rather than you filling the same form twice a week.

You save it as a Host or as a Guest, and the two are not the same thing. A Host says how far out of their way they will go and how many seats they can share. A Guest says how flexible their pickup is: at this spot, or within five minutes of it, or within ten.

E2U asks you once a week whether you are still making them. On Sunday evening you are asked to confirm the week ahead, and nothing is posted for a week you have not confirmed. That is deliberate. Somebody on holiday, or who has changed job, should not have trips going out in their name that they will not turn up for, and a Host confirming the week is a Host saying they actually intend to drive it.

You can skip a single day without touching the rest, and skipping never cancels a trip somebody has already joined. That one stays, and only the days nobody has joined come down.

After a trip that went well you can add the other person to your Travel Circle. When they are going your way again they come up first. A circle changes the order of your matches and never which ones you get, so you always see everybody heading your way. Adding somebody is private: they are not told, and nothing is asked of them.

Money

How is my contribution worked out?

From what the host's car costs to run per mile, using a published figure rather than one E2U invented, times the miles, divided between the people in the car for each part of the journey. The host is one of those people. Then anything your own pickup and drop off added is yours in full, because nobody else benefits from those miles.

The whole calculation, with the numbers.

Can a host choose their own price?

No. A host can accept less than the figure E2U works out. They cannot charge more: the software will not accept it, and E2U will not let a host recover more in total than the journey cost them.

What if a Host goes out of their way?

Then somebody drove extra miles that would not otherwise have been driven, and those miles exist only for you, so nobody else shares them. Meeting a Host at a point they are already driving past adds no miles at all, which is why it is the cheapest trip there is. You are shown all three prices before you choose.

Three ways to meet a host The host's route runs straight across. Meeting on it adds nothing. Being collected nearby adds a short detour. Door to door adds the longest detour. Host starts Host finishes You walk No extra miles Short detour Some extra miles Your door All the extra miles

On the route. You meet them at a point they are already driving past. Nothing extra to share, and this is the least you can pay.

A short way off. They go a few minutes out of their way, and those minutes are yours to cover.

Door to door. Collected and delivered where you asked, and the extra miles that takes are yours alone, along with any toll or parking charge they caused.

A Host sets how far out of their way they are willing to go, and E2U never shows them anybody who would take them further.

What happens if another guest joins after me?

Your share falls, and you are charged the lower figure. The amount you agreed is a maximum, not a price. More people sharing the same stretch of road means everybody pays less for it.

Can my contribution go up after I agree to it?

Not without you agreeing to the change. The figure you were shown is a ceiling. It can fall, and it does not rise on its own.

Who pays tolls and parking?

Whoever caused them. A toll on the part of the route everybody is sharing is shared like any other cost of that stretch. A toll or parking charge that exists only because of your pickup or drop off is yours in full, and it appears as its own line on your receipt.

Does E2U take a cut of what my host receives?

No. E2U's fee is charged to the guest on top of their contribution, and only on the shared portion. It never touches the part that covers a host going out of their way.

The card processor charges 2.9% of each payment plus $0.30. The Guest and the Host split it, half and half, and E2U carries none of it: out of every trip E2U keeps its service fee and nothing more.

What does E2U Unlimited include?

No E2U service fee on any trip you join, however many you take. Your contribution to each host is unchanged, because that is their cost and not E2U's to discount. It is worth having if you travel most weeks; if you travel now and then, Flex costs nothing until you use it.

You can change plan whenever you like, with one condition: once you move, a month has to pass on the new plan before you move again.

Trips

What if plans change?

A host can cancel a trip and a guest can step off one. Everybody on it is told. If a trip is cancelled before it starts, no contribution is due. If the route changes during the trip, your contribution is worked out from the journey that actually happened, and still capped by the maximum you were shown.

Can I cancel?

Yes, and before a trip begins it costs you nothing. A host can also decline anybody, for any reason or none, and declining costs them nothing either.

Is a match guaranteed?

No. E2U cannot promise somebody is going your way, that a host will accept you, or that a guest will join your trip. A posted trip and an open ask are both requests.

How do ratings work?

Both of you review each other after a shared trip, and neither review appears until both are in or the window closes. That way nobody is writing in reaction to what was written about them. Ratings build your standing on E2U over time.

What you need

What do I need to travel?

An account, a confirmed email and mobile number, your profile photo, a government photo ID and a photo of you holding it. E2U approves each one, usually within a day. No car, no insurance, no application.

What do I need to host?

The three above, plus a car on your account, your vehicle registration and your insurance. Your driver's license counts as the ID, so you are never asked for a second card. You add them on your account page and E2U reviews each one.

What E2U checks, and why.

Does E2U insure my trip?

No. E2U checks that a host's policy exists and is current, and nothing more. It does not insure the trip and cannot tell you what any policy covers. Hosts should confirm with their own insurer that sharing the costs of a journey is permitted under their cover.

Verification

Why does E2U need my ID?

Because everybody on a trip is identified, the person driving and the people traveling. It is the whole reason a stranger agrees to get into your car, or to let you into theirs. It is asked once and it is what lets you take a seat at all.

How long does it take?

A person at E2U looks at each document, usually within a day. While something is being checked your screen says so. If something is not accepted you are told why, in E2U's own words, so you know what to send instead.

Who sees my documents?

Your profile photo is shown to the Hosts and Guests on your trips. Nothing else is. Your ID and your documents are seen by E2U for the review and are never shown to another member, never published on your profile, and never handed to anybody you travel with.

What does E2U check about my insurance?

That your policy exists and is current, and nothing more. E2U does not insure your trip and cannot tell you what your policy covers. Ask your own insurer whether it allows you to share the costs of a journey with other people, because that is the arrangement you will be in.
